Digital-Age of graffiti

graffiti Digital Age of graffiti

Graffiti can be traced back in history, to cave paintings, these forms of wall art were to serve a purpose and that purpose is to communicate a message, today noting has changed other then the means in which graffiti is done… now people use spray cans, stickers, posters, markers and technology to voice a message. Graffiti is a form of communication perhaps “non standard” by the views of today’s society but none-the-less still a form of communication. Eduardo Galeano says “The walls are the publishers of the poor” that may have been true 30 some years ago but things have changed in the ways of putting a piece up. Besides I never liked that quote it should be “The walls are the publishers of the people”.

Graffiti is no longer limited to a manual process of hand paintings or printed materials but is moving into a digital realm of computer signals and light. Off the top of my head I posted some sites with some awesome people breaking the barrier of technology and graffiti.

NOTE: A few of these sites are not graffiti related but the technology and concept is there.

nextwall ( Minority report style Graffiti )

graffiti research labs ( old but still pulling off some awesome stuff )

hektor ( this guy uses machines to automate his work )

dobpler ( experimetns with lights )

simonheijdens ( similar to graffiti research labs but more artsy and commercial )

the pop corn makers ( Also similar to graffiti research labs, these guys use a series projectors, camera, and code to have light interact with the surroundings. )

kristensen ( an experiment in light and human interactivity )

gestaltung ( an experiment of giving light a sense weight and depth )
